G.I. Joe first hit the scene in 1964 as an 11-1/2 inch "doll" for boys. What made G.I. Joe unique was its 21 moving parts for interactive play. G.I. Joe is named after the movie "The Story of G.I. JOE" which gained great popularity in the early sixties. The G.I. Joe Doll is one of the most popular dolls in history. Early G.I. Joe dolls are highly prized collectibles. The G.I. Joe figures were approximately the same physical scale as Barbie dolls—11+1⁄2 in (29.2 cm) tall in 1/6 scale, which would make the original figures 5 ft, 9 in tall in real life. There were originally four figures, one to represent each branch of the Armed Forces. Accessory packs (often called "blades" in the toy industry—the "razor" was the action figure and the "blades" were the accessory cards) containing additional gear and clothing were also released.
